Mentee Welcome Packet

Dear Mentee,

We are pleased to tell you that you have been paired with a mentor who will be contacting you within the next two weeks. Please take a moment to review the details below that explain how the SBH Mentoring program works, as well as what you should expect from your mentor.

All of our mentors have been hand-selected. They are all very excited about volunteering in this program. Please remember that your mentor is here to offer you career-related advice and guidance whenever possible. You should treat this mentor/mentee relationship the same way you would treat one with a mentor in a school or professional work setting.

— The SBH Young Professionals Committee

Important Guidelines

  • 1. Right Fit: If you feel that your mentor is not the right fit, please email us at SBHGEM@gmail.com. We would be happy to adjust accordingly.
  • 2. Responsibility: It is your responsibility to keep this relationship strong. Our mentors are professionals with full-time jobs; it is up to you to let them know when you need to talk.
  • 3. Communication: We suggest a phone call or email every 2-3 weeks. Avoid daily contact unless specifically agreed upon.
  • 4. Mutual Respect: Make sure to show gratitude! All mentors are volunteering their time. A simple "thank you" goes a long way.
  • 5. Not Placement: This is not a job placement program. Mentors are not obligated to find you a job, though they may offer advice.

Six Habits of Effective Mentees

1. Ask Better Questions

Instead of "What career should I go into?", try presenting options: "I'm deciding between X and Y... what factors should I consider?"

2. Strong Beliefs, Weakly Held

Show your ideas and convictions, but be open-minded and ready to learn. Mentors want to help people with drive.

3. Long-Term Perspective

Relationships take time. Don't try to cover everything in one meeting. Meander, dive deep, and build a bond.

4. Be Open to All Topics

Don't just talk about work. Probe off-the-beaten-path topics to make the interaction more fulfilling for the mentor too.

5. Consistent Follow-up

Stay in touch at least four times a year. Show interest in their life/business by sending relevant articles or updates.

6. Drive the Agenda

Don't make the mentor do the work. It's up to you to figure out what you need help on and lead the sessions.

10 Tips for the Corporate Mentee

  1. 1. It's your job: Take the initiative; don't expect the mentor to do all the work.
  2. 2. Real Commitment: Avoid canceling appointments; regular contact is key.
  3. 3. Show Up Prepared: Always have an issue or topic ready for discussion.
  4. 4. Give Back: Share how you've benefited; gratitude motivates the mentor.
  5. 5. Realistic Expectations: Discuss how often you'll meet and what you'll work on early on.
  6. 6. Take Risks: Be willing to discuss your weaknesses and push your comfort zone.
  7. 7. Be Yourself: Don't try to clone your mentor; retain your unique identity.
  8. 8. Embrace Silence: Don't fear quiet moments; use them to probe more deeply.
  9. 9. Remove the Elephant: If something isn't working, talk about it immediately.
  10. 10. Pass It Along: Pay it forward by mentoring someone else in the future.
