Position Overview

A senior center in the Sheepshead Bay area of Brooklyn is seeking an experienced and dependable Assistant Cook to join its Dietary Department.

The Assistant Cook will work closely with the Cook and other kitchen staff to prepare and serve high-quality, nutritious meals for seniors. The ideal candidate has previous commercial kitchen experience, understands proper food preparation and sanitation practices, and can work efficiently as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Cook and kitchen staff with daily food preparation and meal service.
  • Prepare and cook meals according to established menus, recipes, and dietary requirements.
  • Assist with portioning, plating, and serving meals.
  • Prepare ingredients and complete other food-preparation tasks as needed.
  • Help maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and organized kitchen.
  • Follow established food safety and sanitation procedures.
  • Assist with proper food storage, labeling, and rotation.
  • Help monitor kitchen and food inventory.
  • Receive and properly store food and supply deliveries.
  • Clean and maintain kitchen equipment, workstations, and food-preparation areas.
  • Follow dietary department procedures and established kitchen standards.
  • Work collaboratively with cooks and other dietary staff.
  • Perform additional kitchen-related responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience as an Assistant Cook, Cook, or working in a commercial kitchen is required.
  • Experience preparing meals for seniors or in an institutional food-service environment is a plus.
  • Knowledge of proper food handling, safety, and sanitation practices preferred.
  • Reliable, responsible, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow recipes, menus, and dietary instructions.
  • Comfortable working in a busy commercial kitchen environment.
  • Ability to lift and carry food, supplies, and kitchen items as required for the position.
