Position Overview
A nonprofit organization in Brooklyn, NY is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accountant to join its team. The primary focus of this role will be managing accounting responsibilities related to city and state grants, including financial reporting, documentation, submissions, and ongoing grant compliance.
The ideal candidate has a strong accounting background with experience working with government grants. Previous experience in the nonprofit sector is highly preferred, and CPA credentials are a plus.
This position can begin on a part-time basis with the opportunity to transition into a full-time role.
Key Responsibilities
Manage accounting and financial responsibilities related to city and state grants.
Prepare and submit required financial documentation for government-funded programs.
Track grant revenue, expenses, reimbursements, and budget allocations.
Prepare grant-related financial reports and reimbursement requests.
Monitor grant expenditures against approved budgets.
Ensure expenses are properly documented and allocated to the appropriate grants and programs.
Maintain complete and organized supporting documentation for grant submissions.
Monitor grant reporting requirements, deadlines, and financial compliance.
Maintain accurate accounting and general ledger records.
Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial reports.
Assist with accounts payable and accounts receivable as needed.
Support budgeting and financial planning activities.
Prepare documentation for audits and grant reviews.
Work closely with leadership and program staff to obtain required financial information.
Help ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit and government funding requirements.
Maintain accurate and organized financial records.
Assist with additional accounting and finance responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications
Previous professional accounting experience required.
Experience working with city and/or state grants strongly preferred.
Knowledge of government grant reporting, documentation, and financial requirements.
Background in nonprofit accounting or nonprofit financial operations is highly preferred.
CPA preferred but not required.
Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting.
Experience with general ledger accounting, reconciliations, budgeting, and financial documentation.
Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
Experience with accounting software preferred.

Strong organizational and time-management abilities.
Ability to manage multiple reporting requirements and deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
